Want to choose just the right color for your labels? Design a logo on the fly? How about simply making the corners of your images round so they look great with round-edged labels? There’s no need to spend money and time on a complex graphic design program when there are so many free tools available to make label design a snap.

In this post, I’ll stick to the many cool tools to choose from if you’re using a Windows-compatible PC. Stay tuned for future posts about Mac and Linux-compatible tools.

RoundMyCorners is a simple online image editing tool intended for people who just want to round the corners of their photos or graphics and don’t have or don’t want to take the time to learn an editing program such as Photoshop. All you do is click “Browse” and upload a JPEG, GIF or PNG image. Tell the program “how round” you want the corners of the image (in pixels) and what you’d like the background color to be, if not transparent. RoundMyCorners will give you back a PNG, JPEG or GIF image.

If you want to match text to photos or graphics for professional-quality labels, there are several free online “color pickers” that will save you the trouble of opening your file in an image editor and dragging out the eyedropper tool just to get the RGB or hex code for the color you want to match. One such program is ColorPic (image shown at right), which is a freeware Windows program. It has a built-in magnifier and mouse “nudge” function, and ColorPic also takes the guesswork out of selecting an entire palette of colors. A couple of programs designed to sample colors directly from the Web are Instant Eyedropper and ColorSchemer’s ColorPix.

Say you want to superimpose a picture of one of your associates over an image of your office and make a business card out of it to print on World Label labels or along with free printable business cards from my site, FreePrintableBusinessCards.net. A freeware program called Merge makes it a one-step process to incorporate elements of two images into one, join four images into a quadrant or merge text with an image. For instance, you could also use Merge to watermark your copyrighted photos on labels or other materials.

How about if you’re still in startup mode and haven’t yet had a company logo designed? CoolText is a graphics generator that can quickly serve up a logo based on a couple of dozen designs with the text, font and color of your choosing. In some cases, you can even upload your own background image. CoolText spits out a downloadable file in formats such as JPEG, GIF, PNG, Photoshop and .XCF (GIMP), ready to print onto labels or add to free printable business cards.

With all of these great tools, you can have fun designing your own labels without the headaches. Remember, if you’re using an online label-design template, such as those available from WorldLabel or FreePrintable.net, be sure to keep all artwork at least one-eighth inch from the edge of the labels.

Kevin Savetz is the creator of FreePrintable.net, a network of more than 25 sites that offer printable certificates, business cards, resume templates, and other printable items.

It's that time of year when the harvest is done and the first frosts are scheduled to arrive. You have plenty of tomatoes and other vegetables that you'd like to can and preserve for winter food supplies. While you might recognize a jar's ingredients because of that container's transparency, not everyone will be as familiar with the ingredients of that jar. And, unless you label a can, there's little anyone can do - including you - to help identify the contents. What can you do to eliminate that problem?

You have plenty of tomatoes and other vegetables that you’d like to can and preserve for winter food supplies. While you might recognize a jar’s ingredients because of that container’s transparency, not everyone will be as familiar with the ingredients of that jar. And, unless you label a can, there’s little anyone can do – including you – to help identify the contents. What can you do to eliminate that problem?

Personal supplies or gifts of vegetables, sauces, soups or jellies that you grew and canned yourself can be dressed up with personalized canning labels. A generic label that you design can be printed out and filled in by hand. If you decide to make a large batch of jam or other foodstuff, you can create pages of a specialized label to identify that container.

Designing your own canning labels is as easy as pie, but only if you know how to create those labels. If you design and print your own canning labels, you can save a ton of money as well. Here’s now to do it:

First, head to our autofillPDF labels to choose a label you can use. Be sure to choose one that includes an “Auto Image/Auto Text” link. For this project, we choose WL-OL125, a 4″ x 2″ label.

Click on the “Auto Image/Auto Text” link within the WL-OL125 box, and a page filled with ten labels will download on your screen:

Label download page.

If the blue areas are not highlighted, click on the “Highlight Fields” link in the upper right corner. Notice, too, that your image will fall on left side of each label, and that images should be no larger than 1.3 x 2 inches. Use a graphics program to save a photo that you have taken or use an image from an open source (such as Open Clip Art Library).

Once you’ve saved an appropriate image on your hard drive, click on the image section of the autofillPDF page to insert your image. Once you’ve chosen that image and clicked on it, the entire page will fill with that image (like our strawberry):

Adding image to autofillPDF document

Next, you’ll want to add text. If you’re making a full batch of at least ten jars of the same item, then you’ll want to fill in the text with the ingredients of the container, your name and date. If you’re making a batch of labels for a number of canned goods, then you can create a place for the ingredients, your name and the date.

To create the text for the labels, simply place your cursor in the highlighted blue field and begin to type away! Once you’ve finished, click your cursor in another blue highlighted field, and your text will appear in all highlighted areas within that page:

Add text to labels.

As a final step, you can save or print out the labels on label paper with adhesive backing.

Worldlabel has all the canning labels you might need, but be aware that you will need to pick out the correct paper for each autofillPDF label that you create. For example, if you want the WL-OL125, a 4″ x 2″ label, then you need to order the WL-OL125 label sheets for printing. You’ll discover that you can order various materials and quantities when you arrive at that page for ordering.

Other ways to create labels are to find labels that were created for personal use from other designers. Two such sites to find labels include Tipnut and A Sonoma Garden. But, you always can order paper from Worldlabel as an inexpensive online method to create those labels on your own printer.

Have you searched for an inexpensive way to create artistic labels? Worldlabel.com has a nifty little tool – the Label Designer 5 – that you can download and use free for fifteen (15) days. This is just enough time to design that wine label, make stickers for a mass mailing, or to create patches for that missing bar code. The possibilities are endless, and if you decide to keep the Label Designer, the price won’t burn a hole in your budget. In this short tutorial, you’ll learn how to create a quick-and-easy label using just some of the many tools within the Label Designer 5. To follow along, you’ll need to download the Label Designer. Or, if you’re skeptical, you can follow along and decide to download later.

The Label Designer 5

You can go to the Label Designer page to download the software for Windows Win98, Win2000. WinME, WinXP and Windows Vista. The size is a mere 4kb, so it takes little space. Once you download the software, click on the icon on your desktop (or the name of the software in your download file) and follow the instructions to install the software on your computer. Allow the software installation to install an icon on your desktop so it’s easy to access. Click on the software icon on your desktop, and you’ll see the following image:

Click on “Use Trial,” and another window will pop up:

Click on the “Create a new design using the Design Wizard,” and you’ll see a new window that shows you a number of label sizes and shapes that you can purchase through Worldlabel.com:

For this exercise, you can click on the menu button under “category” and choose “Name/ID Badge.” One label will be presented, the WL-OL5030 (Name Badge Label). Before you click on the “Next” button, look around this tool a bit. You’ll see that you can reverse orientation on any label you choose, you can retain this size label for later use, and you can search by product or by SKU number. Convenient! When you click on the “Next” button at the bottom of this window, another window will pop up that shows the label along with an area for you to upload a template if you had one. Since you’re creating this label from scratch, click on the background button at the top of this window. Click on “Select or Customize Background and you’ll see something similar to this image:

I say, “something similar,” as I’ve already chosen a background for this name tag. I went to “Picture Filled > Scenes” and then flipped through some images in the bottom left window to settle on the sunset image. You can pick a different image if you like, and once you settle on a scene (or another background, such as a texture, a gradient, or a color-filled background with a border, then click “OK” and then “Next.” You’ll learn that you’ve finished with the design, and you can click “Finish.” Your image will show up on the screen within the Label Designer like so:

Since this is a “quick-and-easy” guide, I’ll point you immediately to the buttons on the left of the Label Designer tool:

You can use the top tool to select anything within the art window by clicking on the item in the window where your picture is located. The second tool is the text tool, and you’ll use that tool in a minute. The tool located below the text tool allows you to insert a bar code, and the following tool is the picture tool, which allows you to add more images. Finally, the last two tools are art tools that allow you to draw a straight line and to add graphic images such as arrows. All these tools are used in almost the same way, so using the text tool will give you a leg up on how to use the other tools. Since this is a name tag, you’ll want to add a name to the art image in the window. To do this, click on the “T” for the text tool and then click on the artwork. When you click on the artwork, a “Property Editor” will pop up on the right side of the Label Designer window:

In the window that says, “Text,” you can place your cursor and write whatever you want. In this case, I wrote “Joe Sunset”:

You will not be able to see the type on the image, as the default color of the text is black. So, you’ll want to change the color, and probably change the size of the text as well. Click on “Font and Style,” and the following tools will appear:

I clicked on “bold,” changed the point size to 26 (the numbers next to the font name, “Arial”), and changed the color to white by clicking on the color patch in the area shown above. The label now looks like this (like magic!):

Now you can click on the name and drag it around the name tag to place it anywhere you want. You may discover that your text does not fully show on the artwork once you change the type font and color. The text is there – it’s just hidden behind the layer that was created when the text was smaller. Simply click on the text at the edges until you see an arrow. At that point, drag the edges out and/or down so that the entire text is showing. If you feel your name tag is finished, then go to “file > save” to save it on your hard drive.

The free version of Label Designer 5 will place a watermark on your product, but this watermark is eliminated once you purchase the product. You can now print out the name tag, copy and paste it so that you have a number of name tags to print out on a full page of labels, or save it for later. Once you get the feel for the Label Designer, you may discover that this tool can cut your time and save you money when you’re under the gun to produce various creative label products. You can crop, mirror, flip and rotate images, and add noise and gamma and other effects just like any other top-line graphic program. You also can use your own artwork and/or photographs or scan pictures or use a digital camera to add artwork directly into this program.

Think about all the designs you could create for CD, VHS, cassette, diskette and Video spine and face labels. Glance through all the formats to recognize your potential! The true value to this tool, which currently can be purchased for a mere $24.95, is that your formats are already created for you – all you do is add artwork (or not) and text or bar codes, dates and more. Whatever you need for your creative labeling is right here in a smart little package.
